A short story collection about Basement Man ; moody drunk, sometime rock climber, absurdist philosopher, raconteur of the ridiculous, rogue, and not-so-merry prankster from the North End of Yonkers (aka Junkies Paradise). An every-man for nobodies, he is ever adrift between the carrot of sobriety and the reality of carpe diem. Bowing only to the laws of Murphy, he can never decide whether the lucky ones are the survivors or those who died years ago.

This is a book for drunkards you know.
For me it's actually sort of melodramatic for a character who is so into drinking and doing adventures while drunk. Hence the funny mishaps on his adventures. He tags along people in his adventures. You'd really feel as though you were talking to a man who's so drunk and who's got so much stories to tell about his juicy past and his unfinished business.
I actually found the story line quite complex with all the characters coming in and out, all from his imagination as it is told in first person. Nevertheless it entertained me. Though honestly found it a little hard to read cos of too much slang and curses too but were definitely needed to pull off one great story.
Thanks for the book, was too lucky I got it on FREE DAY of promotion. I did not get the first one. Looking forward though for my afternoon reads.

Southbound edition by Joseph Ferguson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Southbound is a collection of stories which starts off straight hard down on the road behind Kerouac and Bukowski.
Though the flavor is in same vein, Southbound paints it own unique and vivid picture of the protagonist Basement Man. His is the character who ties the threads together. From the start we see him through the eyes of the nameless narrator as a drunk and mysterious bum. But through the stories as they unfold we catch a glimpse of him and more is revealed until our tragic hero laid bare before us. Like all good stories, there is tragedy, pathos and comedy. With the help of the nameless narrators and a collection of likewise tragic and memorable characters, we see them rushing headlong though life come what may.

* I received a copy of this book for review. All opinions are my own.
As I read this collection of stories, I decided each was my favorite. Then, I read them again, and again and decided it’s not possible to choose a favorite because they are all remarkably well-written and insightful. Few times, in the fifty-four years that I’ve been an avid reader, or the almost as many years that I have been writing and studying great writers to learn from them, have I run across a writer who impresses me as much as Joseph Ferguson does. Basement Man crawled into my heart and will remain there forever. The action and dialogue are so real that I felt as though I was right there in these stories. And, each word was masterfully chosen to make the timing perfect and the intent known. At times, I felt guilty for enjoying stories that I know, under the surface or down the road, most likely become painful realities for these characters but it was impossible not to enjoy the characters and the great writing, no matter what I thought might happen later. Hope to see more from this author.
In Southbound the party is over but the drinking goes on. Told in the rough language of the streets, Joe Ferguson’s stories center around Basement Man strong and lost, a man who studies cliffs he can no longer scale and bridges he won’t cross, a man who sees the train coming yet refuses to step off the tracks. Set in North Yonkers in the 60s, Southbound features drunken fights, cheap wine, killer weed and outrageous storytelling as its characters struggle to make it through another day.

“Yeah.” Basement Man spit out the word and turned to look down the tracks running along Warburton Avenue and on past Woodworth and Ravine. Streets where thick clots of black men decked out like Superfly, stood in front of bars with names like Peyton Place, Seven Wells, and the Blue Flame; on past Otis Elevator where his old man had worked his way up from the line to manager and back down the line, and finally out the door; on past the old train station standing proudly with its broken clock facing Larkin Plaza, where children, mothers, icemen, coalmen, vegetable men, factory workers, and four-foot tall grandmothers in immigrant black once sat for band concerts on warm Victorian nights; now inhabited by hookers and bums, pimps and junkies; on past the once-rich South Yonkers neighborhoods on into the Bronx, Riverdale, Spuytan Dyval , and the towering dominos of Manhattan.

Reading Southbound is like walking past a bar on a Sunday morning, smelling the exhale of stale beer and cigarette smoke—and deciding to dive right in. Written with a nod to Dos Passos and Bukowski, Southbound features a memorable cast of characters, all seeking oblivion and redemption, whatever comes first.
What a life! What a world! What a language! What a story! This narrative feels so real that you think you are actually watching an old reel-to-real movie, sitting in some partially-lit, smoke-filled room. This statement is a metaphor to the story as well to what the reader, particularly those who grew up in the sixties, may feel-like. With this book, you will go back to those times and won’t come out until you read the last sentence “I got to peel like a racehorse.”

Brandon aka Basement Man is a man who never grew up, a profligate who lived for his booze, parties and weeds; a dreamer who never actually done anything courageous or bold, except in killing himself.

The storytelling is marvelous, although at times, things happen so fast that it’s hard to keep track of events. The language is authentic, mimicking the characters’ level of education and lifestyle. Many of the passage and similes are vivid and right on. Here are examples

“Soon after that, Rosalind comes back from her break with rain runnin offa her like she was a roof gutter, and a look on her puss like to dry the drops in mid-air.”

“And with the rain crashin down over me, feels like I'm takin that long-overdue shower.”
“Well, everyone was just sorta standin there on the porch gawkin at him like a crowd around an accident scene.”
If you like fast-paced, real life thrillers, you will enjoy this book. Get yourself a copy and read it.
