The body was found in a grove of trees. From the beginning, John Larimer knew there was something wrong about the woods; the trees were growing in neat rows. They had been planted by someone years before and the artificial nature of the grove gave John an eerie sense of wrongness. The wrongness would morph into something worse when he found the writing on the trunk of the tree in the exact center of the grove. He recognized the letters; four letters written in ancient Aramaic on the bark of a tree in the midst of an artificial forest planted in a remote area of rural Idaho. At the foot of the tree bearing the inscription was where John found the man's body.
Over the next days, the mystery would turn deadly. The dead man appeared to have been killed by a self-inflicted injection of bovine spongiform encephalopathy; Mad Cow Disease. The local police thought the medical diagnosis was impossible. John knew it was not. As the director of security for the Spring Research Corporation laboratories in Boise, John Larimer knew that the death of Doctor Solomon was a far more serious matter than merely the unexplained killing of one respected scientist. And even as John began to expose the plot behind the doctor's death, he would find himself over and over again led back to the wrongness of an artificial grove of trees. A grove of trees that should not have been there. A grove of trees labeled with words that should not have been there. A place of dim and shifting shadows where a body was found that should not have been there.

This novel begins with the apparent suicide of a scientist working on government-funded vaccines at a facility in Idaho. But the facts don't add and the corporate security chief, a former intelligence officer who served in Israel, works with local and federal authorities to resolve the incident. The deeper he digs the more he is certain that this was a murder. Is the scientist the unlikely victim of a ritualistic sacrifice or is there even more at stake? This is the second book I've read by this author, but will certainly not be the last. I look forward to the sequel as well as other works from Garland Dennett.Product details
