Jim Payne follows the waterways of America, living a Tom Sawyer life in his 12-foot kayak, getting scared, soaked, and bailed out of trouble by Samaritans he discovers along the way. His escapades span the country, fro the Hudson River to the Columbia, from the Mississippi to the Erie Canal.
As Payne's adventures unfold, you never know what's around the next bend He's entrapped by security guards at Mount Vernon, loses his rudder off the Florida Keys, and sleeps in Franklin Roosevelt's bed. Across 1,6000 miles, this middle-aged runaway often loses his sense of direction, but never his sense of humor.
One Inch above the Water eBook Jim Payne
This well-authored book covers five of Jim Payne's kayak adventures. The back cover may give the appearance that Mr. Payne is a runaway, but as the book unravels you find that he does lead a pretty stable life in Sandpoint Idaho and he is just.. well, a rather adventurous older man.Jim starts his kayak traveling at the age of 57. Although written chronologically, the travelogues are not one continuous trip - the reader is treated to excursions on the Potomac, the Columbia, the Hudson, a foray down into Key West and finally a trip down a portion of the Mississippi. It would be very hard (and take a very judicial reviewer) to determine what trip would be a favorite - they are all that good. Payne retells his travels with interesting anecdotes of American history and often interspersed with a wry self-deprecating humor. Whether by design or by coincidence, Payne manages to capture a broad geographical variety of the American landscape and speaks of the people that he meets on the East Coast, Quebec, the West and the deep South. Nor is the reader spared from the adventurers own misgivings, oversights and mistakes; the account of near hypothermia on the Mississippi serves as a solemn reminder to any outdoorsman to prepare for the absolute worst. Then on the other hand, the reader may be amazed at the resourcefulness of the paddler when he finds a creative repair for his rudder off the coast of Florida.
Good reading and the spirit of adventure gives this book a worthy 5 stars rating.

One Inch above the Water eBook Jim Payne Reviews
Yep five stars. Had trouble putting it down and I am not really a kayaker. Payne is a fine writer and his travels, insights and observations are a treat to read. He's also a brave guy. I'm not new to the outdoors but camping wherever you can find a place, carrying almost all your own food and with the constant concern about capsizing....well I am impressed.
Excellent book especially for the older paddler who doesn't want to give up the fun in life just because we grew up and matured while facing responsibilities of being an adult. The writer helps us remember to enjoy everyday with adventure and thankfulness. I too have escaped on kayak trips and share his thoughts thru so many pages of this book. Thanks for sharing what so many of us have been thinking. Great to enjoy the outdoors and solitude of quiet times on the water.
I have read many books about adventure. This book stands alone at bringing me, and average kayaker that loves adventure and bringing me along for the ride. I finished the book inspired to get started now on doing some meaningful and doable trips. I've been waiting for a time when I had months to dedicate to such trips. This book made me realize I can start now. Thank you Jim.
This is a self published book, but unlike so many others of that laudable genre that brings us interesting stories at low cost, the author has a good turn of phrase, understands and uses proper grammar and tells a very good story. Since I just turned 60 myself I am delighted to read about a man slightly older than that performing feats of physicL endurance that would be pretty remarkable at any age. Well done.
I've read a lot of books by kayakers, and have enjoyed most of them. But never could I picture myself actually undertaking a journey anything at all like the ones I read about. Until now. Here is a book that has "reality" and "doable" plastered from first page to the last. Payne is a man who has fears about situations encountered while paddling a little boat just inches above the water whirlpools, rapids, big boats, big wakes, little boats, stupid people. But these fears didn't keep him off the water. He never shrugs off the fears but instead revels in surviving them. This book is part adventure, part travelogue, part comedy, part drama, part social commentary. I want to go where he went and meet the people he met.
I've been to the shorelines of most of the waterways Payne paddled. On occasion I paddled about in a few. And like Payne, my heart pounded and I clutched my paddle tight when I really didn't have much to fear - but fear itself.
He has inspired me to stop paddling in circles and instead aim for a straight line and an overnight or two. If he could do it, so can I. Or so he's left me believing.
Payne writes simply but beautifully. I had a hard time putting the book down and finished it much sooner than I would've liked. I am looking forward to more stories of Payne's journeys down - and up - rivers.
There is a tendency in publishing to only publish accounts of journeys to exotic, distant places. Jim Payne 's journey were asking several of the great waterways in the U.S. At an advanced age for the solitary paddler, Mr. Payne tackled impressive stretches of Lake Champlagne to the St. Lawrence, the Columbia, the Potomac, and the Mississippi - all told from the perspective of a guy paddling his kayak. His writing style is like his approach to paddling matter of fact and simple. This book isn't one of the classic takes of grand expiration. But it is a very pleasant read.
This is an oddly engaging read. It's nonfiction. The author chronicles his several solo kayak trips at various US locations. There are no suspenseful grand adventures or deep philosophical musings, it's a straightforward account of his trips and what happened day to day. Consesequently you get a sense of the landscapes and people he encounters that is not retouched with sentimentality or symbolism. I enjoyed the stories and following his travels, altho' it was not a "can't put it down" read, but rather a meandering journey.
